Research Task: Types Of Music Videos
00:00
The four main types of music videos are:
- A Narrative Based Video: this is a video consisting mainly of a story line relating to the lyrics or genre. This is where visuals are in line with the narrative and are also used to portray lyrics further adding a visual element for the audience.- Narrative Based
- Performance Based
- Concept Based
- Lyric Based
-A Performance Based Video: this is a video based around an artist/band performing to an audience or camera. This could be a concert performance using an audience where there is high energy and is more meaningful for viewers to see a band performing in an almost raw performance.
(Beyonce's song 'I Was Here' was released as a Performance Based Video of her song at the United Nations World Humanitarian Day)
-A Concept Based Video: this is a video based around an idea, message, statement or view. They are sometimes unusual or ambiguous and often concentrate on a specific editing technique. Lyrics may not relate to visuals and may even have a complete different message, however some may be self-interpreting where viewers are able to provide their own interpretation.
-A Lyric Based Video: this is a video that is mostly made up of visual effects created in the editing process and only some, if any are filmed. These videos use effect to create lyrics on screen for viewers to follow, sometimes an official music video is not released yet so some music companies release a lyric video or just a lyric video is released. They tend to have visual effects and varied editing techniques to create bold lyrics that are in time with songs.
(Cold Water by Major Lazer ft Justin Beiber and MO, is a lyric based music video where lyrics are only shown using visual effects)
There can also be hybrids of the different types of music videos, for example a music video can be Narrative Based but include some conventions of a Concept Based video. There are also many music videos that are Narrative based but include elements of Performance in them.
The type of music videos that appealed to me the most were Narrative Based music videos and Concept Based music videos. This is because I want there to be a message in the type of music video I want to create, whether that's in a overt fashion like Narrative Based videos or covertly like Concept Based videos. The reason I have not decided to continue researching the other two types is because I want to do something more interesting that a Performance Based video and I don't want to do a Lyric Based video as I want to include more cinematography than visual effects.

Can you link the theory of the types of music video more clearly to the examples you have given?
