Initial Planning: My Chosen Genre

11:33

From knowledge I have learnt through researching and my own personal experiences with the music I listened to I have decided to choose to create my narrative-based music video around the genre of 'Indie'. The reason for this is from researching I have found out that this genre is very versatile in it's style and can vary depending on the song meaning. The other reason for this is that this is one of my favorite types of music and I feel I have a lot of experience around it and know the genre quite well.

Indie is a short-form for Independent or Independence. This means that the context of production is independent from any conglomerate or big industry. There are many sub-genres within Indie such as:

  • Indie-Rock: Indie rock is a mixture of many other genres, including alternative rock, folk music, electronica, even pop. It also tends to be very positive music, despite popular opinion. Many indie rock bands are characterized by the use of unique or less-popular instruments.
  • Indie-Pop: This type of music is seen as more upbeat type of music to rock where some elements of pop music are combined. This music that is lighter and less depressing than most Indie Rock, and unlike Indie Rock may use more advanced musical instruments mimicking some pop conventions.

This type of music is seen as 'alternate' and not like many mainstream songs. They may be seen in the charts a lot less compared to mainstream pop which is where most of the market is today. Indie music is catered more towards niche groups, and may have messages in their lyrics that are seen more meaningful rather than your generic heartbreak song. Because they are independents, they tend to have smaller budgets than your average pop band's record label and therefore may only be able to run small domestic music videos. This may also be another convention of the Indie Genre where musical instruments used are less and there may only be just one or a few locations used.

Where did Indie come from?
In the mid-1980s, the term "indie" began to be used to describe the music produced on punk and post-punk labels.A number of prominent indie rock record labels were founded during the 1980s. During the 1990s,Grunge bands broke into the mainstream, and the term "alternative" lost its original counter-cultural meaning. The term "indie rock" became associated with the bands and genres that remained dedicated to their independent status. This was defined as being detatched from the 'Big 6', the 6 main ruling media conglomerates in the world. This has however not stopped big record label bands claiming to be 'indie' regardless of the fact that they are not in actual fact an independent or niche band.
By the end of the 1990s indie rock developed a number of subgenres and related styles. Following indie pop these included lo-fi, noise popemosadcorepost-rock and math rock. In the 2000s, changes in the music industry and in music technology enabled a new wave of indie rock bands to achieve mainstream success.
In the early 2000s, a new group of bands that played a stripped-down and back-to-basics version of guitar rock emerged into the mainstream.

In conclusion, the original genre Indie is based around a simplistic approach to music. This is through the actual music such as instruments used and tone of the music or through the actual music videos such as cinematography, editing and misenscene.

Based on this research I have decided that my narrative-based music video will be based around the genre or Indie-Rock.
