Research Task - Chosen Media (Music Video)

13:45

What is your chosen media?

My chosen media will be a music video, this is because I like the idea of creating a narrative alongside music. My other idea was a trailer however i'd prefer to do a music video over a trailer as I feel a trailer limits how much of a narrative you can include without giving too much of a story away whereas in a music video you are not as restricted. A short film was also a potential idea, however I believe I would struggle to keep it interesting.

What is a music video?

A music video is promo video released alongside a song to promote the music and band/artist. Music videos tend to follow a narrative, much linked to the meaning of the song which create reality from the lyrics of a song, however not all music videos are actually relevant to songs and some music videos such as those by Sia are seen as ambiguous and not directly related to the music. Music videos can be seen as a method of promotion for a single or an album as it gives the audience a visual element to the music they're hearing.

What are the key aspects in your chosen form of media?

Below are key aspects of a music video analysed by Andrew Goodwin (1992) in his publication 'Dancing In The Distraction Factory' in brief:

-Lyrics with visuals: lyrics having a direct relationship to the visuals on screen, e.g lyrics relating to narrative shown in visuals

-Music and visuals: music having a direct relationship to the visuals on screen, e.g beat of music being in sync with visuals such as strobe lights

-Close-ups of artists: closeup shots of artist, tends to sing the lyrics.

-Star Iconography: this is branding of certain features of a music video such as clothing, choreography etc

-Voyeurism: this is the concept of something not usually seen by the viewer or something that is shocking e.g nudity

-Intertextuality: reference of other films, books, music, artists etc in a music video.

  1. Great reference to a theorist! Could you give specific examples from music videos to support Goodwin's theories here?
