Research Task: Narrative Based Video Research

07:05

A narrative based music video is a music video that is based around a narrative/storyline. This means that the visuals on the screen tend to correspond to the meaning of the lyrics.

What do they contain?
-sometimes fast paced with a lot of shots corresponding with the music
-intertextuality, referencing to other films, movies etc
-mimic other TV genre, e.g horror, romance
-sometimes the story can contradict lyrics for effect
-sometimes the artist is part of the storyline or completely seperate.

Often the video tells a story that either feature in the lyrics or is suggested by the lyrics e.g guy dumps girl/girl dumps guy. An example of this type of breakup narrative would be 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' by Taylor Swift where Taylor sings about not wanting to be in the same  relationship with a guy again (below).

However although most do tell a story that features in the lyrics, there are some videos that lyrics either contradict what is seen or has no relation to it. An example of this is 'No Money' by Gatlantis. The lyrics of the video is evidently about having no money however the visuals are obsecure and feature people wearing face paint and joining each other in the streets. Although some may class this are more concept based than narrative, actors still sing the lyrics whilst doing so (below).

A narrative is like a mini film/story with a beginning middle and end and narrative music videos tend to use this format to tell the story. By the end of a narrative based music video you tend to see a state of equilibrium and resolution to the story however not all follow this ending as it could be that some narrative based music videos leave narratives on a suspense or a state of ambiguity otherwise known as a 'cliffhanger'. This can sometimes be a 'shocker' where the audience is exposed to a new series of events they did not expect. An example of this would be 'Call Me Maybe' by Carly Rae Jepson where the whole video is about a girl liking a boy to find out in the end that he is actually interested in guys (below).

Some music videos that are released alongside a movie for cross-promotion or synergy tend to use visuals from the movie and mirror a similar narrative. An example of this would be 'Love Me Like You Do' by Ellie Goulding, this was released alongside the 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' movie and follows a similar narrative by using visuals from the film (below).

Although it seems as if all narrative based music videos are based around the idea of relationships and breakups, this is not always the case. Narrative of music videos can vary from relationships to friendships to youth and having fun. Below are a few of these examples:

'Faded' by Alan Walker, a narrative based around losing everything important to you and being lost and isolated.

'Take Me To Chruch' by Hozier is a narrative of not being accepted because of his sexuality, although it involves being in a relationship; the main message of the music video is about being marginalized by the church and constantly being in danger.

'Royals' by Lorde follows a narrative of accepting that you won't live an extravagant and expensive lifestyle but being content with what you've got.

In conclusion, there are many different elements to narrative based music videos however the main component of these videos is the relationship the lyrics have to the visuals. Having a distinct relationship between songs and cinematography mean that they can be easily interpreted however having an obscure or no link means that ambiguity is created and viewers can interpret the video in their own way.
