Research Task: Generic Music Video Analysis
12:22So I decided to analyse a music video based around a narrative and chose to analyse 'We Don't Talk Anymore' by Charlie Puth.
Camera Shots and Angles
This is common for music videos to focus on breakup narratives however it is unique to have two alongside each other. We first see a city landscape which seems to of been shot from a handheld camera, because of this we are able to realize that there is a split screen as movement is not consistent throughout the frame, emphasizing the unique split narrative.
Throughout this music video we see that narratives on both sides of the screen are similar as it seems they tend to be doing similar things to each other. An example of this is when we see a closeup of them both in bed, she is facing towards the camera whilst he is looking at the ceiling. This closeup of them both show intimacy that may of once been however the split screen determines separation between them. This is done on a handheld camera which also gives the effect of something genuine and realistic which can be used to describe the emotions that they once had.
They also both grab their phones in a medium shot, and by doing this in almost synchronization it can show how they are both in a similar mindset about their breakup.
Everytime there is a closeup there is meaning behind it for example a closeup of her holding hands with a guy shows intimacy and how shes moving on but similarly we see a closeup of his hands on a piano at the same time showing how he has started to fall in love with his music instead. We see a closeup of them both on their phones, where we can see his last message being 'I see how it is..' which can show that they perhaps didn't end on a good note.
She then types 'Hey!' but deletes it which can show that she is missing him or there are things that were left unsaid. A closeup shot usually indicates something important and we see later on how this shot has some significance. We also see a closeup of their faces as he looks up and she holds her hair in her hands which can indicate distress.
When there are closeups of their faces, he tends to be facing away from the camera whereas she is always facing it which can indicate his distance. Then there are both closeup, mid and long shots of them getting ready and leaving the house which show that they have similar routines. On both sides of the screen we see similar shots taking place whilst they are out, we see synchronized walking over the split screen where it looks as if their leg is one as they walk.
This can also be used to indicate them still being close. We also see many simialr shots such as medium shots of the back of their heads, Although both sides have similar shots one always seems to be quicker than the other. Throughout the music video we see them both in a series of medium and long shots having a laugh with friends but closeup and medium shots when they feel alone or are trying to text or call one another which shows that they are closer than any friends.
Near the end there is the use of montage to playback all the memories, we see pictures of them together perhaps in their relationship which creates a sense of nostalgia and emphasises their yearning of their relationship.
Then finally we see a closeup of them about to text eachother and then erasing it whilst the other person can see that their typing which creates an atmosphere of tension. Then neither of them text eachother and in a longs shot collapse on the bed.
Editing
Editing is done uniquely here through a split screen. The use of a split screen shows us two separate narratives where we see two different storylines. This can also show us a breakup in the perspective of two different people. Throughout the music video we see both sides of the screen doing similar things in a routine sometimes at the same time which can show how similar they were or how close they were. Apart from the narratives being shown similiar throughout sometimes we see a differentiation in their routines which can indicate how they do also have different lives.
There is a fair bit of synchronisation here which I have talked about. As well as shots being synchronised to be similar to eachother shots are also edited in time with the music at some points. This can be shown right in the beginning where lyrics appeared on screen in time with the singing of the same lyrics. This is a common convention of music videos. This is also the case throughout for example around 1:53 whenever the lyrics would reach the end of a sentence one side of the split screen would change shots. This keeps music videos exciting and energetic. This shot changing continuously is also another editing technique I saw where during around 1:50, one side of the split screen was faster than the other in terms of moving to the next similar shot. For example, when she is scrolling through pictures of him around 2:05, the shot is quite long of her just scrolling whereas on the other side there are multiple shots of him with his friends. This can represent how time with him slowed down whereas he was more engrossed in his friends. This is unlike the rest of the video where all shots were synchronised between them which can show some instability in thei rrealtionship. Their is also the use of crosscutting where both sides almost became one, for example where they are walking in a closeup on the pavement their leg looks as one because their walking is synchronised. This is used multiple times which can show how synchronised they used to be
Sound
Sound isn't anything other than the music being played, but the meaning of the song is about two people growing apart which is what the visuals relate to.
Mis-en-scene
So firstly the actors were a girl and a boy which is a common convention of music videos to portray breakup songs through heterosexual couples. Their body language also gave a lot away too, for example when they were alone and missing eachother they would be slouched and wouldn't have much emotion on thier face wheras when they were with their friends they were more friendly by laughing and sitting straight. We also see where she is holding her hair right in the beginning when they are texting which can show distress. Their is also a lot of body language which shows intimacy for example when the girl holds hands with a guy, this shows her getting intimate towards another guy and potentially moving on. This is also shown for him when he and a girl are smirking at eachother in almost a flirtatious manner. Later we see then both kissing other people which is a big indicator of becoming personal with someone.
Props are also used here but not heavily. However one of the most heavily used prop is the mobile phone. This is used when they are almost texting eachother or looking back at pictures of one another. Regardless, the mobile phone is the only thing that they are linked to eachother with. We also see both using another prop which is a camera. She is using a camera to capture a day out with friends which is quite friendly and welcoming whereas he is in a studio being photographed which is more artifical. This is a contrast in the way the camera is used and can show how their lifestyles are different.. Another way this is shown is through the transport. He is being driven around in a flashy expensive car whereas she is trying to catch a train, this shows the contrast in their lifestyle and presents him as having a more flashy routine whereas hers is more down to earth. The costumes used aren't too significant apart from the fact they are both wearing clothes that are quite casual and typical for someone of their age
The lighting does vary throughout the video as we see how the lighting is very dark and mellow when they are alone and remembering each other whereas the lighting is more brighter and exciting when they are with their friends. This shows that perhaps when they are alone they remember each other and their mood is more emotional and upsetting whereas when they are with their friends they forget. However nearer the end the lighting with their friends did get darker which may be a demonstration as to how their friends turned out to not be enough for them.
Proposition in this video was used effectively where significant things such as the mobile phone and the couple on their own were shown in closeup shots so they took up most of the space on the screen. Another example of this is whenever there was intimacy whether with friends or new love interests shots took up a lot of room on the frame which can show how significant they are to the two main charecters. This was also shown when the guy was playing around with his music, it took up most of the room on the screen to signify how important it was to him. Similarly when they were feeling lonely and away from friends sometimes they took up less room on the screen to establish distance.
