Research Task: Genre-Specific Analysis 1

10:04

For my first genre specific analysis I wanted to analyse Roses by The Chainsmokers.

Camera Angles/Shots
One of the most common shots in this music video is a handheld shot. In fact, the first shot we see in this music video is a handheld shot.
We are introduced to the music video with a handheld mid shot of a woman on a desk.
This is very common shot and it seems that whenever we see this woman in the beginning of this music video it is almost always through a handheld camera shot.
Here are some examples throughout the beginning of the music video:
This is a handheld mid shot of the woman on the desk through a window.

This is a handheld mid shot of the woman locking up the store.
This is a behind-the-shoulder handheld shot of the woman walking.
These handheld shots of the lady on her own could present how unstable she is when she is alone, or how vulnerable she is. This is a common convention in the representation of women and it plays on of Propp's charecter archetype of an almost 'damsel-in-distress'.
This contrasts heavily with the shots of her dancing, which are very stable and smooth.
All of these shots of her dancing in the beginning of the music video were still shots with no movement of the camera, which contrasts with the handheld shaky shots seen alongside them.
This could represent how dancing and performing keeps her rational and is something that is very significant to her as it brings her stability.
The cutaways of dance throughout this music video are used as a rhetoric device to present her emotions throughout.
There are also many long and mid shots here too:

This can be used to express distance and loneliness which is what she may feel without her lover.

Smooth shots are also true of the shots we see of the guy as most of those shots are stable, clean shots.
A still closeup shot of him looking out of a window.
A smooth pan of him walking in a airport.
A still closeup of him talking on the phone.
These shots of the guy are very steady, unlike the shots of the woman which are shaky. This contrasts as it presents the guy as being level-headed and put together and makes her seem more vulnerable. This representation of the male charecter is very stereotypical as it plays on the notion that males are more stable than women.
The idea of someone affecting your emotional stability is carried on as when these two charecters do get together, we do see shots that are smooth.
This can present how they both balance each other out and rely on each other for comfort.
We do also see some handheld shots, but this is only when things get more serious between them.
Using handheld shots make the scene more intimate and personal and gives an almost raw outlook to the scene.
Here we also see a lot of closeups too:
Which once again create intimacy and make presents how significant one person is to the other.
Around this scene is where the stable dancing shots turn into fast, handheld and shaky shots.
This cutaway is used to represent how passionate things are getting between them and the dancing gets more intense here which can show the undying chemistry between them. It can also imply that they are having sex around this scene as after the dancing we don't see things progresses further.
Another thing we see after this is a shot of the guy getting up which is out of focus:
Out of focus shots can sometimes represent how a charecter is confused or not in the right mindset. Following this we do see him leaving her alone with no element of affection which may present how he may have regret of their encounter.
We also see long shots when he is leaving:
This can present how he is distancing himself from her, not just capacity wise but perhaps emotionally as well.
The narrative continues and we see them reunite, we also see a mid-shot of her floating when she is dancing:
This may show how she feels 'on top of the world' and can present how she feels uplifted around him.

Editing
There was one editing technique that stood out to me here and that was the use of a separate narrative of a woman dancing alongside the narrative of two lovers. This was shown through cutaways to the performance throughout the music video and it is used as a device to protray emotions of the woman throughout the music video. We see the dance in various forms throughout the video, adjusting to the overall atmosphere in the narrative.

This is shown here when she is lonely:
Here the performace is reflecting her lonliness as she is quite distanced from the camera and the dance is slowly paced and mellow which creates an almost melancholy feel to the narrative.

Here when she meets him:
Here the performance is mirroring her getting closer to the guy as the camera is closer and the dance is beginning to become slightly more complex and intense which can mimic her feelings towards the guy.

Here when it gets intimate:
Here we see shots that are closer and the dance becomes more intense and vigorous which reflects the passion in the narrative alongside

Here when he leaves her:
The camera once again is further away and dancing is more intricate and delicate which mirrors her fragility.

Here when he comes back:
Here the dance becomes more powerful and active which can reflect how overwhelmed and dazzled she feels towards him.
Playing this narrative alongside the story line is effective as it allows the artist to express how the charecter is feeling and therefore influence the way in which the audience charecterises them.
It also is used cleverly as a form of censorship as the dance gets more powerful when they are getting intimate to imply that they are having sex.
We also see in the editing, strategic shot placement or order of shots. An example of this is matching shots, where we see one shot of something happening followed by a similar shot.
Here are some examples of this,

walking and walking:

smoking and smoking:

kiss and kiss:

This is effective as it presents their relationship even through the editing. Seeing both narratives carrying similar shots signifies how similar they are and emphasises their connection with each other even when they are not together.
Another editing technique we see here is shots in time with the music, one example of this is where the chorus drops after a click sound and just as the click sound plays, the image turns to black/ clicks off.
By having shots in time with music makes the music video more entertaining and it grabs the attention of the audience especially when they wait for the chorus to drop.
Transitions are also used in this music video as an editing effect. One example of this is where the guy leaves and we see a fade:
Using this type of transition between two shots of him leaving can show a transition of time and this is effective as it emphasises his departure from her.
This is also seen just after he left and she is putting her cigarettes away.
Using this transition here presents once again the concept of times changing and her giving up bad habits.
fade to black:

Another technique we see near the end is the use of speeding down clips. This is shown when she is dancing and jumps in the air, both here:
and here:
This technique was used when the narrative showed them reuniting which highlights how it feels that time had almost stopped for her and shows how she was relishing the moment.

Misenscene
Firstly we see many different lgihting techniques that are used to protray a certain emotion or charecteristic.
When we see the woman alone we tend to get a lot of dimly lit shots. For example, here is her on the desk:
By having lighting that is dimly lit or dark can portray loneliness and feelings of despair, so this may reflect the feeling of isolation she may be feeling.
As we see dimly lit shots of her alone, there are darkly lit shots when she is dancing too:
The lighting here is very dark with a centre spotlight (that isn't very bright either). By having this dance narrative less lit than the rest of the music video emphasises how harmonious this dance is for her and suggests that it is very significant to her.
Darkly lit shots are also shown when the couple are getting amorous:
This again suggests intimacy and privacy and darker lighting connots to secrecy and lust between the couple.
Although most of the music video is darkly lit, this emphasises the scenes that are more brightly lit.
One example of this is where things are getting sexual between the couple, the lighting of the dance narrative change brighter and more intense:
By the clever choreography of the dance, altering the lighting to the mood presents how almost darkness or feelings of darkness within the woman is gone and the guy almost lights her up. It also emphasises the passion of that moment for them. This is also shown when they get together again where the bright lighting connotes to feelings of happiness and joy:

We only have one scene in this music video that is well lit and almost daylight light. This is the morning after the couple get togther:
Although bright light tends to connote to feelings of uplift and joy, here it is contrasted as the narrative shows him leaving almost abruptly in the morning. This plays on the idea that darkness conceals and creates secrecy and thrill; which they no longer have as it is no longer night. It also creates an almost morning-after mood which is a pragmatic suggesting mistakes were made the night before.
Frame composition plays a big role here too as I touched upon in camera angles/shots. In the music video, we would sometimes see long shots when the woman was alone.
Because her composition is therefore far away from the camera and she is taking up less room, it suggests feelings of isolation and distancing.
Contrasting with that we also see shots where the couple take up a lot of room in the frame. For example when they are kissing:
Because they are taking up the whole frame is suggests significance to the narrative as this is an important part of the music video. It also highlights their relationship being close as they are pretty closeup to the camera.
This is contradicted when we see the next morning him leaving.
His composition being far out in the frame suggests feelings of distancing and regret for what had happened.
Not many props are used here but there are two props that are very significant.
One of these is the cigarette:
The use of the cigarette/smoking is played upon in this music video as we see them both with a cigarette or smoking in sequenced shots. This prop is used in many ways, for example is could be used to express the stress or regret they both feel the morning after as people tend to use cigarettes as a mechanism to cope with those things. It could be a connotation of bad habits as smoking is seen to be one of those. It could suggest how she is a low delayer and falls easily back into bad habits (one of which may be him.) Cigarettes are also a common prop in the genre of indie as some indie music tends to be based around the idea of rebellion and bad habits.
The other prop that is of some significance is the petals that are used in the dancing scene near the end:
Petals were only used in this part of the music video, near the end where the couple seem to of reached an equillibrium again. This may be a symbol of celebration of this as petals are used for this traditionally. Flowers and petals also connote to romance and happiness which may be symbolic of their love.
Finally the actors in this music video are a woman and a guy.
This follows the common convention of a music video as couples do tend to be heterosexual in them. Their outfits/costumes are pretty common and are based around fashion of young adults which is again another common convention.
The narrative is based around their relationship and it's high and low points which we are shown throughout the music video which again is a pretty familiar aspect in music videos.
