Research Task: Genre-Specific Analysis 2

01:58

For my next genre specific analysis I have decided to analyse 'Somebody Else' by The 1975.

Camera Angles/Movement
First off we start of with a short narrative on what looks like a set. It is a long shot revealing a set:
The shot doesn't change in it's composition throughout this whole sketch which is approximatly 3 minutes long. By having a still camera for this amount of time creates a sense of intrigue and draws more focus to the obscure narrative. The long shot also helps create an element of distance between the couple
When the actual narrative does play we are introduced to many long shots throughout the music video.
Long shot of him walking down the stairs:
Long shot of him from behind:
Another long shot of him walking from behind:
By using these long shots it helps to convey his distance and helps to express the loneliness he feels.
Long shots are also used in a different way throughout this music video.
Long shot of him with his head in his hands:
Long shot of him slouching:
By using long shots here is gives a good view of his body language which reveals him as being in despair as slouching and holding his head reveals he is either reflecting or drained.
We are also revealed to many closeup shots throughout this music video.
Here closeups are used to draw attention to the face.
We see most of these close-ups as the chorus comes up and he sings. Here the closeup is used to express the emotion of emptiness on his face.
Here it draws attention to him rubbing his face which highlights how frustrated he is.
Here is draws attention to the nosebleed he has which implies that he is in some sort of trouble.
Here it reveals him crying which emphasises how upset he feels.
By using many closeup to reveal different elements of the narrative it helps the audience to understand what is going on better.
Most shots throughout this music video are handheld shots. A lot of the beginning of the music video is handheld shots.
By using handheld shots right from the beginning it starts of the music video already indicating some sort of disruption, or presents him as not being very stable.
This is also shown when he is in the cafe:
Again this handheld shot presents him being emotionally unstable and this is validated by his facial expression of him crying.
We also see this when he is drinking at the bar:
By having handheld shots here it emphasises his drunken state and vulnerability.
Handheld shots are also shown when he is punched onto the floor, which is followed by a canted angle:
The handheld shot emphasises disruption and instability as he had fallen onto the floor, and the canted  angle emphasises trouble and weakness. This is furthered by the handheld shot of him walking with a nosebleed as it shows him being almost shaken by the experience.
It is also shown when he is about to leave with the girl:
This creates intimacy as handheld shots are quite realistic and bring genuineness to the shot.
It can also highlight their drunken state as they are quite unstable.
We are also introduced to a shot-reverse-shot here when he sees the girl:
By using shot reverse shot between characters it usually helps communicating when they are talking however here it is used to highlight a connection between them. The shot of him again is also a lot closer up which expresses how significant she is to him, this then implies that she is the girl he is singing about.
We also see an eyeline match where we see him looking and then see what he is looking at:
Here the eyeliner match reveals him actually looking at himself, and the shot of him looking creates ambiguity for the audience as we see his expression before we see the thing that has caught his attention.
We also see an out of focus shot when he is drunk:
This emphasises his drunk state and indicates his ability to not be able to see very clearly, which then furthers the idea of him not being able to think very clearly either.

Editing
The narrative is overall non linear as we see different parts of the narrative out of order.
The narrative of this music video is broken down like this:

  1. The scene on a set
  2. Him being heartbroken
  3. Drinking and getting drunk
  4. Meeting a girl
  5. Leaving with the girl
  6. Having sex with the girl
  7. Back to him drinking and hallucinating
  8. Him thinking he's met a girl although there's no one there
  9. Leaving on his own although he thinks he's with a girl
  10. Ending up in the car having sex without the girl.
It starts with an almost sketch like scene that is on a set where we see a character coming in, getting undressed and then ready again and leaving the house. We also see someone on the sofa with their head down but it isn't revealed who this is. This is significant to editing as there is a reason it is placed before the music video so it must have some sort of significance. It also seems completly unrelated to the video as it is just a guy doing random tasks.
The sound here is edited too as when he does speak it's indecipherable and unclear.
Here we also see the use of clips being sped up when he is packing the suitcase up again.
All of these editing techniques in this scene and just the entire seen itself is obscure and strange. This creates an element of intrigue for the audience and sets the music video up with an impression.
Many people have actually tried to analyse the clip as to what it could actually mean or what the hidden message behind it is. one source claimed that this scene actually fits in well with the song 'UGH' by The 1975 and actions of the actor mimc lyrics sang if you play them both at the same time.
One example of this is when he looks into the mirror in this music video:
If you line up the song 'UGH' with it, the lyrics 'using other people's faces as a mirror for you' fit exactly in time with when this actor looks in the mirror.
Similarly this technique happens with the phone rings in this music video:
If you line up the other song with it, the lyrics 'I think i've lost my phone why don't you call it up for me' line up exactly with the part where the phone rings in this music video.
Although this is just one perspective, it really shows how the artist uses their videos to challenge people's thinking and therefore it becomes an almost concept based music video.
As mentioned, the narrative here isn't presented as being linear in any way. This is because we see a lot of clips of things that haven't happened yet.
For example we see a quick shot of him with a nosebleed at 3:55, before the scene where he gets the nosebleed which is actually at 6:10
This is also shown where we see a quick shot of him pleasuring himself at 3:17, before the scene where we find out he's actually been masturbating with himself and not actually having sex with a girl at 8:19
We know that these are both cataphoric references as to what the narrative will reveal as when these fast shots are shown, there is a an almost glitch sound.
This then reveals that the narrative is non-linear as these clips can be seen as foreshadowing events. By having the narrative almost inconsistent it can be a reflection of his thought process as being almost jumbled.
We also see a technique here where the narrative is repeated/replayed:
(The first images are the narrative we see first and the second images are where the narrative replays)

In the first time we see the narrative we see a shot of him with the girl on top of him:
The second time the narrative is played we see him himself:

The first time the narrative we see him leaving with a girl in the camera screen:
The second time the narrative is played we see him leaving on his own

The first time the narrative is played we see him and the girl dancing in the car park:
The second time the narrative is played we see he is actually dancing on his own:

The first time the narrative is played we see him and the girl having sex in the car:

The second time we see the narrative he is actually having sex on his own:
By replaying the narrative it reveals the true version of events that he was actually imagining it all himself and there was no girl. It also presents him as being an unreliable narrator and shows the audience just how lonely he actually is. It also shows us just how he isn't in the right mindset at all.
In this replay of narrative we also see characters changing faces.

Here one of the guys turns into the girl the song is about:
Then when he does a double-take it turns into him:

Here we see her again when he is getting beat up:
But upon closer inspection it turns into him:

We also see here that the girl it seems like he's having sex with turns into him in a wig:

By having this character manipulation near the end of the music video creates a sense of disturb and once again presents his mind being almost jumbled and confused. It can also reflect his drunken state where he is imagining things that aren't happening.
Another editing technique seen here are cutaways to different scenes throughout.
The elevator scene:
Car scene
 Cafe scene
 mirrored bathroom scene:
 Bar scene:
These are the main scenes that are interweaved throughout the music video.
By having this editing technique, it brings variety by introducing different settings to the audience making it more interesting.
We also see a montage technique when he is drinking:
Here we see various clips of different angles of him drinking.
The use of this montage is effective as it emphasises the amount it is drinking which helps to characterise him as vulnerable and reliant on drink.
The tempo of music fits in well with these fast shots, an example here is when the chorus dropped, these three shots were exactly in time with the each beat of the song.
This is effective as it helps to keep the music video upbeat and exciting for the audience.
Another example of this is where it quickly cuts to a shot of him singing as the lyrics as the lyrics come up in the song:
This was done in time with the music and as it was only a quick shot it once agin helps to add excitement to the video and keeps the audience interested.

Sound
The sound is obviously the song of the music video however at the beginning when we see a sketch on a set there are some sound effects.
The first is the sound of an almost live audience, this includes clapping, laughing and booing. We also hear the phone ring in this sketch. There is some element of dialogue between the characters however it is almost censored and manipulated to sound almost alien-like. it is indecipherable and not easy to make out.
The use of just these sounds on the set creates a sense of intrigue as to the purpose of the scene and it's participation in the narrative.

Misenscene

Lighting-

It starts with a black and white scene where we are shown the short sketch.
By having this as black and white it separates it from the actual narrative which can emphasise it's significance. It also can also present it as the past as an almost film noir scene, which brings emphasis to when we are introduced to the present day in the next scene.
When it does start we are introduced to a cool lit scene that is almost blue toned. This can be used to demonstrate his feeling of lonliness.
This is also shown when he is in the car, except it is a harsher and darker blue:
Here it emphasises how his sadness has peaked as this was part of a narrative close to the end of the music video when we find out he was alone the entire time and not with a girl like we were shown.
There is only one part of the music video that is well lit. It is when he is crying in a cafe:
Although it is well lit, the lighting is very bright and harsh which can create an uncomfortable atmosphere. This highlights how in this scene is the only scene that he is actually crying and can present the uncomfortableness of the people having to witness it as well as his own discomfort of crying in public.
We are also shown scenes lit with blue and red tones:
The blue presents his sadness throughout but the next scene we see is him getting intimate with a a girl so the mixture of colours may present the mixture of his feelings of sadness and lust.
The same is shown when he is in the bathroom:
Here is the scene where he gets intimate with the girl:
This is completely red lit which connotes to lust and desire, and it being just red presents how at that moment he has forgotten all feelings of despair he once had.

Props:
One of the main props we see is the drink/alcohol:
This is a significant prop as it contributes to the narrative of him being drunk for most of the music video which emphasises how he is almost drinking his feelings away.
The other props we see is the set at the beginning which was filled with household furniture:
This scene in it's entirety was obscure anyway however the props contributed to the setting of a living room. The household furniture created the atmosphere of a generic, normal home however other features such as the sound and the strange grafitti on the wall juxtoposed this. Which again created an almost creepy atmosphere.
The bunny graffitti was obscure as grafitti is seen as something done outside in public however having it in their home foregrounded the idea that things were not in order or balanced.

Proxemics between charecters are also shown in this music video.
Here we see for most of this sketch that they are far apart with eachother doing their own thing:
The distance between them physically can present their distance emotionally which can be seen as foreshadowing in the narrative.
This is juxtoposed when we see a shot of him with a girl closer together:
Them being so close together in the shot emphasises the lust between them and the intimacy that is being created.
Posture in this video is also quite important as it can present how a charecter is feeling. For example here we see him slouching or with his head held up or down throughout most of the video:
This presents how is is so exhausted by how he is feeling and can emphasise feelings of despair.
The costume plays a significant part in this music video too
The main actor is seen wearing dark clothing and a leather jacket:
This is a common convention of a the indie genre as leather jackets is seen as quite a popular fashion choice in indie videos. Also the dark coloured clothing connotes to feelings of loneliness and depression.
Also the pole dancer in this music video is shown wearing less clothes:
This sexualises her and emphasises how his mind is fixated on having sex at that point in time.
The reason we see this shot multiple time as a cutaway when he is walking highlights how he is looking at her and how his mindset is focused on fufilling his sexual desires.
The actors in this music video are shown as a stereotypical couple:
This is a common convention of music videos to present heterosexual couples in them as it relates to most of the general audience.
